Quilt National '13 represents the 18th biennial presentation of this unique exposition of the art quilt medium. Established in 1979 as the inaugural exhibition of The Dairy Barn Arts Center, its longevity is fueled by both the growing ranks of artists who embrace the medium and the general population's insatiable interest in this particular form of fiber art.
The breadth and depth of the artistic submissions never ceases to amaze. Over the years, surface design has expanded to include all manner of fiber manipulation—dye, discharge, digitally created design, organic dye, manipulation by the elements. Artists from all over the world have literally taken apart the traditional quilting processes and reassembled them in a new manner. They have elevated the creative process from a craft that utilized scrap fabrics to an art form that begins with the creation of the fabric itself. While basic techniques—piecing, appliqué, embroidery—are still in evidence, the basic nature of the fiber "building" blocks are broadened by the inclusion of contemporary techniques such as computer design.
The ultimate result is a collection of inspiring quilts in this book representing artists from 27 states and 12 artists from 7 different countries. The judges' statements give you insight into the selection process and their thoughts while putting together this collection.
